Historic day for Bolivian football. This Friday, in the match between Real Santa Cruz and Universitario de Sucre, which opened the Clausura Tournament, VAR was used for the first time. As it is an unprecedented act, Fernando Costa, the president of the Bolivian Football Federation (FBF), agreed to the commitment.
The arrival of this technology caused so much expectation that there was a kind of opening ceremony on the eve of the contest held at the Real Santa Cruz stadium. Costa participated in this significant act, who cut a ribbon in front of the monitor located on one side of the pitch.
“The Clausura is inaugurated with VAR technology and from that date more justice will be imparted and we thank the professional football leadership who provided their support for. Thanks to the unity and support of the entire soccer leadership”, declared the head of the FBF to the media present on the scene.

The first action of the VAR
Jordy Alemán was appointed as the main referee for the game. The referee was called by his colleague Juan Nelio García, the person in charge of the VAR (Juan Pablo Montaño was appointed to AVAR), for a specific action. There was friction between Alex Ortega, from Universitario de Sucre, against Samuel Guzmán, from Real Santa Cruz.
For that action Alemán showed Ortega the yellow card. But, after the call from the video arbitration booth, the match authority reviewed the play again for a possible red card. The referee complied with all the protocol: he approached the screen to review what had happened frame by frame.
After almost a minute and after seeing all possible angles, Alemán returned to the grass to ratify the decision: yellow for the man from Universitario. In this way, Bolivian football experienced a historic moment in the second championship of the season.
Dorny Romero scored a hat-trick for Real Santa Cruz's 3-0 win over Universitario de Sucre in the Clausura.
