The National Institute is located in the heart of Santiago and just a couple of blocks from La Moneda Palace.

A 15-year-old student was stabbed inside an emblematic school while a musical activity was taking place in Chile.

The attack occurred inside the IInstituto Nacional General José Miguel Carrera, a historic school located in the heart of Santiago de Chile, and in which more than a dozen former Presidents of the country studied.

The information handled by the Carabineros police is that everything happened when a musical band was performing in the courtyard of the compound. For reasons that are being investigated, the young man suffered the attack at that time, and was transferred to the emergency room of the San Borja Hospital to receive medical treatment.

The school later indicated that the victim “happily is recovering satisfactorily without risk.” In parallel, a group of students left the place to carry out demonstrations, erecting barricades and throwing Molotov cocktails, according to BioBioChile reports.

The Undersecretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve announced the filing of a lawsuit and that he will request an exclusive prosecutor to investigate this type of cause in emblematic educational facilities in Santiago.

“Unfortunately, this fact is added to a series of acts of violence, which occur outside and sometimes inside the so-called traditional high schools (…) The time has come to say enough is enough and take all the measures that allow these acts to end. ”.

Emblematic school

The National Institute is one of the most important educational centers in the country. It opened its doors on August 10, 1813.

For years it was recognized as a bastion school of public education in the country, and 18 former presidents of the Republic of Chile, such as Jorge Alessandri, Salvador Allende Gossens, José Manuel Balmaceda and Ricardo Lagos, have been educated or have passed through it. To this is added an extensive list of ministers, national awards, among other prominent personalities.

The National Institute is part of the history of student mobilizations in the country. He was an important actor in the 2011 and 2019 demonstrations, which has sparked constant unrest to this day with protests and periodic clashes with the police.

Although the National Institute was only for men , in 2019 the educational community was inclined to add women to this campus. In January 2022 it was reported that for the first time there were more women than men enrolled in the seventh grade educational level with 322 girls enrolled and 318 boys.

From the campus they condemned the attack on the 15-year-old student announcing an investigation process and the cancellation of classes for this Thursday.
