At least 15 attacks against candidates for the municipal elections in Ecuador have been registered in the Andean country, which is preparing for the elections on February 5th. The most recent attack resulted in the assassination of one of the candidates for mayor of Salinas, a municipality 140 kilometers from Guayaquil, on the Ecuadorian coast.
The politician, Julio César Farachio, was taking a tour as part of his campaign events when a hitman shot him and ended his life. Farachio was seeking the mayoralty of Salinas in a partisan alliance made up of the Sociedad Patriótica, Mover and Unidad Popular parties.
Farachio, 45, practiced as a lawyer in cases of traffic violations, criminal and labor cases. He had no criminal record, but he did have nine pending legal proceedings with creditors.

The death of the candidate occurs 15 days before the sectional elections, in which Ecuadorians will vote for the authorities that will represent them in the prefectures, mayors and parish councils. Farachio's death adds to the other attacks that, since 2022, the candidates for these elections and the people in their close circle have suffered. Even the National Electoral Council has included in the voting simulations, which are already being carried out, risk situations such as fights, attacks with explosives, etc.
After the assassination of the candidate Farachio, the president of the Council Electoral National, Diana Atamaint, expressed solidarity with the families and political organizations that have been victims of violence in the electoral context and pointed out that: “This will allow us to act in coordination and undertake the design of new mechanisms, institutions and regulations to preserve the greatest good of Ecuadorians : peace and democracy”.

For its part, the National Police indicated that the alleged mastermind behind the murder of the Salinas mayoral candidate was captured.
All the attacks and murders against the candidates have occurred in the midst of the official discourse that ensures that drug trafficking has penetrated the country and has ties to certain political sectors. Even Lasso, and some ministers, have referred on several occasions to “narcopolitics”, and have assured that the government has evidence to prove these links.
Ecuador suffers a wave of violence that began with the prison crisis that has already left more than 400 inmates murdered since February 2021. The violence that is experienced in the streets has caused Ecuador to become the Latin American country where the most violent deaths during 2022.
In the electoral landscape, for example, between December 20 and 21, 2022 alone, there were four violent attacks in Manabí, 140 kilometers from Guayaquil, and Esmeraldas, on the northern border of the country.

These attacks took place in Manabí against the candidate Javier Pincay, who wants to get the Mayor of Portoviejo. Pincay was attacked by hit men and shot three times while on a political tour. Although he survived, the candidate is in critical condition. One day after the assassination attempt, an explosive detonated near one of the vehicles that Pincay used to tour the city. According to the local media, near the explosion, the attackers left pamphlets with the message: “Javier Pincay, I told you, you don't play with drug dealers' money.”
Also on December 24, a taxi carrying Pincay propaganda signs was incinerated. Next to the car, pamphlets were found with the legend: “Javier Pincay and his allies, the term is ending. From now on they will find incinerated cars, burned houses and a bit of that string of people who copy you dead.”
On December 21, Jonás Intriago , another candidate for mayor of Junín, in Manabí, was also the victim of a threat. Well, they shot at his house. That same morning, the nephew of Gisella Díaz, a candidate for the Esmeraldas Municipal Council, was murdered by hitmen, according to El Universo.

Prior to these recent attacks, the candidate for mayor of Esmeraldas, Frickson Erazo, was attacked on October 18 and 26 of this year. Those who attacked him burned one of his vehicles and shot at his home, at the height of his bedroom. Also, an explosive detonated in front of his home. Last November, a cousin of Erazo's was murdered in Esmeraldas. The candidate has maintained that the attacks against him are “political violence”.
To these are added other cases of candidates and advisors who have been attacked and even the case of a pre-candidate who He was also riddled with gunmen.
