On There was a blackout in Cuba: millions of people were left without electricity

All of Cuba is without power after an accident at one of the island's main power plants. The situation in the power system was tense even before that.

CNN and Reuters write about it.

According to the Ministry Energy of Cuba, "failure" power plant Antonio Guiteras caused a "total blackout of the national electrical system" October 18 around 11:00 a.m. local time. Because of this, about 10 million people were left without electricity.

Almost all commerce in Havana stopped. As CNN points out, generators — a luxury for most Cubans.

Energy officials say they don't know how long it will take to restore operations.

There was a lack of energy even before that. Thus, during the week, the Cuban government called for energy savings, in particular, it sent most civil servants home from work, temporarily canceled classes in schools, and closed nightclubs and recreation centers. Only “indispensable employees” must report to their workplaces.

Cuban officials have blamed the problems in the power system on increased US economic sanctions that are creating fuel shortages, recent hurricanes and the poor state of the island's infrastructure.

The energy crisis in Cuba is not a new problem. The island's limited infrastructure has not received adequate maintenance for years, with regular blackouts dating back to the 1990s.
