In China, a unique buffer power plant on flywheels, which instantly transforms kinetic energy into electrical energy, has started operation. This installation has a capacity of 30 MW and is the most powerful system of its kind in the world.
China tested new energy storage devices, among which a buffer power plant on flywheels stands out. This system stores kinetic energy in the rotating flywheels and instantly converts it into electrical energy, since the engine and generator are combined in one device.

Production was carried out by Shanxi Electric Power Construction Company in cooperation with Shanxi Institute of Energy. China Energy Construction also participated in the construction. The facility was named Dinglun Flywheel Energy Storage. 340 million yuan ($48 million) was allocated for its creation. Completion was originally planned for December 2023, but the start-up was delayed until the end of summer 2024.
The power plant in Changzhi, Shanxi Province, has a capacity of 30 MW and includes 120 flywheel generators distributed over 10 units (12 units in each to each). The energy frequency is stabilized within each unit, and all units are connected to the 110 kV high-voltage network.
For safety, the units are submerged in a well and are in vacuum on a magnetic suspension, which reduces noise and increases efficiency. This system is the most powerful in the world and probably the only one serving utilities at this level.
Flywheel plants can quickly switch between energy storage and consumption, ideal for storing energy and smoothing out peaks in its consumption.< /p>
