The world's first electric hydrofoil ferry was launched in Stockholm

Sweden has taken a significant step in the electrification of water transport by putting into commercial operation the world's first electric hydrofoil ferry, the Candela P-12, which is currently operating in Stockholm.

This vessel is a breakthrough in both environmental sustainability and efficiency of waterborne public transport, setting a benchmark for future maritime innovations, says Elektrek.

The Candela P-12 stands out in the industry with several key advantages over traditional diesel ferries. In particular, the ferry operates with minimal noise and generates only minor waves thanks to hydrofoil technology. This design highlight is especially important in urban areas, where strict regulations often limit wave heights on certain routes.

The Candela P-12 can reach speeds ofup to 46 km/h, allowing it to move through Stockholm's canals faster than regular ferries. In surface mode, the ferry can overcome waves up to one meter high, and in submerged hydrofoil mode – up to two meters, providing passengers with a smooth, stable ride even in difficult conditions.

  • With a capacity of 30 passengers and the possibility of carrying additional luggage, the design of the Candela P-12 ensures efficient and comfortable travel. Operated by one crew member, the ferry has a carrying capacity of 3,000 kg and a weight of 10,000 kg.
  • It is powered by four traction batteries, each with a capacity of 63 kWh, providing a range of 74 km .
  • Batteries can be charged at a 175kW DC station, taking just 45 minutes to reach 85% charge from 10%.
  • Working on the 15km Stockholm route, Candela The P-12 can rival traditional diesel ferries in terms of comfort while offering significantly lower operating costs per passenger and significant environmental benefits.
