The world's first artificial “energy island” will provide energy for 3 million homes

“Princess Elizabeth Island” in Belgium will make it possible to deliver large volumes of wind energy from the North Sea to the mainland.

The Elia Transmission Belgium company will build the world's first artificial “energy island” in Belgium, which was named “Princess Elizabeth Island”. Interesting Engineering portal writes about it.

The project is expected to reduce Belgium's dependence on fossil fuels and provide more affordable green electricity. It will deliver large volumes of wind energy from the North Sea to consumption centers on the mainland.

According to the company, Princess Elizabeth Island will provide Belgium with 3.5 GW of new offshore wind power capacity, accelerating the country's transition to clean energy. This will make it possible to provide more than three million households with electricity.

The “Energy Island” will be built between 2024 and 2027 approximately 45 km off the coast of Belgium. It will be the world's first man-made power island to host both high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and alternating current (HVAC) infrastructure.

The high-voltage infrastructure installed on the island will bring together export wind farm cables, and will also serve as a hub for future connecting lines that will connect Belgium with Great Britain and other countries. These hybrid interconnectors will enable the exchange of electricity between Belgium and its neighbors and will also be connected to large wind farms in the North Sea.

“The Princess Elizabeth Island project is a cornerstone for strengthening the energy security and independence of Belgium and Europe . This initiative not only strengthens Belgium's energy infrastructure, but also promotes vital interconnections with neighboring countries, thus contributing to the expansion of regional cooperation,” — said Robert de Groot, Vice President of the European Investment Bank.
