U.S. lawmakers and regulators are discussing imposing tough measures on bitcoin mining due to its large carbon footprint. This is stated in the report of the Office of Science and Technology Policy of the White House.

According to the document, miners are invited to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with the participation of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Department of Energy and other federal agencies.

< p>The White House also suggested that the government collect more data on the energy consumption of the industry, promote energy efficiency standards and “use environmentally friendly technologies” for mining.

If these measures do not work, energy-intensive bitcoin mining may be banned.

“If these measures prove ineffective in reducing impact, the administration should explore executive measures and Congress could consider legislation to limit or eliminate the use of high energy-intensive consensus algorithms for mining of cryptoassets,” the report says.

It also mentions the upcoming transition of the Ethereum network from Proof-of-Work to Proof-of-Stake. The White House called this move “the most visible response to calls to use less energy-intensive consensus mechanisms.”

Recall that in April 2022, the lower house of the New York State Legislature supported a moratorium on mining with using electricity generated from carbon sources. The bill was later approved by the local Senate.

In August, members of the US House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce sent mining companies Core Scientific, Riot Blockchain, Marathon Digital and Stronghold Digital a request for data on the impact of their activities on the environment.
