The “Hound of Hell” and “The Nightmare” variants of covid were detected in Chile and fear a new rise in cases

In Chile there are specialists who believe that the notion of risks must be reinstated so that people take their own responsibilities.

Announced in Chile the detection of the subvariants “< b>Hound of Hell” and “The Nightmare” of covid-19, which could lead to an eventual rise in cases and even a return to wearing masks.

As reported by La Tercera, the subvariantsBQ.1; BQ1.1 and XBB, or better known as “Hellhound” and “The Nightmare”, were investigated in samples taken at border crossings according to the Variant Report released by the Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health. The information from the outlet adds that, according to experts, “it is to be expected that its proliferation will increase rapidly in the coming weeks.”

The European Center for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC) believes that these subvariants will represent more than 50% of new cases in the old continent, and given the imminent arrival of the summer period in Chile, it is believed that an eventual greater circulation of these.

For Jeannette Dabanch, an infectologist at the Clinical Hospital of the University of Chile, the important thing in this new scenario is not to wait for everything to get worse.

< p class="paragraph">“To the extent that a virus has the ability to evade the immune response, and which also has a characteristic of producing persistent symptoms in immunosuppressed people, it will continue to mutate and this can generate a higher rate of severe cases and deaths. Let us remember that the more infected there are, there are also more deaths from Covid-19″.

On the arrival of the “Hound of Hell” subvariant, the Minister of Health, Ximena Aguilera, said that “when these variants have the ability to evade the immune system and reinfect us, they begin to predominate globally. That is what has happened with this variant (hound of hell), which has indeed been detected here, but it is not the predominant one as far as I know.”

Masks

Chile has no longer used masks as a requirement since the beginning of October this year, although there are specialists who believe in the possibility of using them again to avoid further infections or new mutations.

The epidemiologist from the School of Public Health of the University of Chile, Gabriel Cavada, said that “the notion of risks must be reinstated, we must re-educate about vaccines. In addition, a slightly stronger cultural persuasion is missing. It can no longer be considered coercive measures, such as forcing the use of masks. It is necessary to inform and that people take their own responsibilities”

Dabanch believes that in order to avoid an increase in infections “it is necessary to put a barrier to the transmission of the virus. The use of a mask must be reiterated in places where there are a significant number of people and physical distance cannot be maintained safely.”

In the last 24 hours, 5,846 were detected in Chile new infections of Covid-19 and 12,853 cases are active. There are 57 reported deaths and positivity nationwide reached 15.11%. The authorities reported that there are 229 critical beds available and 37,163 tests have been carried out.
