US will sell Taiwan NASAMS air defense system, which passed combat tests in Ukraine

The United States approved a potential $2 billion arms package for Taiwan, which includes NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems, which passed combat tests in Ukraine .

The US is obliged by law to provide Taiwan with means of protection, despite the lack of official diplomatic relations.

Agency of the Ministry of Defense The U.S. Defense and Security Cooperation Agency said the package includes $1.16 billion worth of missile systems and approximately $828 million worth of radar systems.

“This proposed sale is in the national, economic, and security interests of the United States, supporting the recipient's ongoing efforts to modernize its armed forces and maintain reliable defense capabilities,” the statement said.

In particular, the package included NASAMS anti-aircraft missile systems, as well as medium-range air-to-air guided missiles AIM-120 AMRAAM, which is used with this air defense system.

It is noted that the NASAMS system has passed combat tests in Ukraine. For Taiwan, NASAMS is a new weapon. The only other countries in the region that currently use it are Australia and Indonesia.
