The US Department of Commerce has proposed banning the sale and import of cars equipped with certain technologies linked to Russia and China. The proposed rule, announced by the Bureau of Industry and Security, refers to cars that exchange data with the outside world via cellular, satellite and other communications.
The proposal would cover a wide range of road vehicles, including cars, trucks and buses. However, it would not apply to machinery used off-road, such as agricultural and mining machinery.
The initiative is part of a broader U.S. effort to protect critical infrastructure from potential security threats from other nations. The U.S. government has expressed concern that technology from countries like China and Russia could allow outside actors to collect sensitive data or interfere with vehicles, posing risks to both national and public safety.

If adopted, the rule would prohibit manufacturers with ties to China and Russia from selling cars equipped with such systems in the U.S., even if they are made in the country. It is proposed to introduce restrictions on software starting with the 2027 model year, and on hardware starting with the 2030 model year.
