The US assured that the balloon Chinese is part of an espionage program that collects information on military assets
TheUS intelligence services believe that the Chinese spy balloon that flew over its territory last week is part of a vast aerial surveillance program with which Beijing collected information about military assets in various countries, reported the newspaper The Washington Post.
According to the aforementioned outlet, US intelligence linked the Chinese spy balloon shot down on Saturday with a wide surveillance program run by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) and therefore Washington began cross-checking with its partners and allies who have been similarly attacked.
These surveillance balloons, which have operated for several years from the Hainan province , off China's south coast, have collected information on military assets in countries and areas of emerging strategic interest for China, including Japan, India, Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines, according to the newspaper.
The Washington Post cites as sources several US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.
“What the Chinese have done is take incredibly old technology and basically couple it with modern communications and observation capabilities” to try to get intelligence on other nations' militaries, an official told the newspaper.

Last Monday, Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman led a briefing on China balloon spying for about 150 people of some 40 embassies, a senior administration official familiar with the matter told the US media.
The department also sent all US embassies “detailed information” on this type of espionage. “There has been a lot of interest in this from our allies and partners,” said a management official.
Analysts don't yet know the size of the balloon fleet, but there have been “dozens” of missions since 2018, another US official was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
Adding they take advantage of the technology provided by a Chinese private company that is part of the country'scivil-military fusion effort, a program through which private companies develop technologies and capabilities used by the PLA.

In one of the photos a military frigate can be seen in the background next to the boat.
The Navy indicated on its social networks thatthe photos were taken on February 5 near Myrtle Beach in South Carolina.
The head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, VanHerck explained in a call with journalists that the Navy ship USS Carter Hall, is participating in the rescue work, which is near the place where the balloon plunged into the sea, along with a boat Pathfinder, which has a sonar, which will help create a map of the area.

“We expect the area of the wreckage to be about 1,500 meters by 1,500 meters, that is, more than 15 football fields by 15 football fields ”, VanHerck said.
US President Joe Biden was notified a week ago that a Chinese spy balloon was flying through the country's airspace and since then it was flying for several days until it was shot down off the coast of South Carolina.
