The United States announced on Friday a new assistance package for Ukraine in its war with Russia of 2.2 billion dollars in weapons and ammunition. Meanwhile, France and Italy have agreed to supply kyiv with mobile surface-to-air missile systems, the French Defense Ministry said on Friday.
The list includes more munitions for HIMARS rocket systems, which have enabled Ukrainian forces to target behind Russian lines, plus air defense units and armored vehicles, reported the Pentagon -Department of Defense-.
The new package includes a new rocket-propelled precision bomb that could nearly double the scope of kyiv's strikes against the Russians, the Pentagon has reported.
Defense Ministry spokesman Pat Ryder said that the new package includes ground-launched small diameter bombs (GLSDB), a munition that can fly up to 150 kilometers, threatening Russian positions and depots far behind the front lines.
An Abraham tank
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24 last year, the US has allocated29.3 billion dollars in military aid to kyiv, it is the country that has provided the most aid to Ukraine since the beginning of the war.
In recent weeks, Washington reported the shipment of 31 Abrams tanks to kyiv, after Western allies such as Germany, the The United Kingdom and Spain announced that they were going to send tanks to the Ukraine. The US also announced the supply of Patriot anti-missile batteries to the European country.
In the case of the Abrams tanks, the US will train the Ukrainian military in their handling in a third country, while in the case of Patriot batteries it is doing so in its territory at a military base in Oklahoma.
Meanwhile, the systems, called MAMBA or SAMP, contain a battery of vehicle-mounted medium-range missile designed to offer protection against airborne threats such as missiles and aircraft.
The missile systems, jointly developed by NATO members France and Italy, will help Ukraine “defend itself against Russian drones, missiles and planes”, the ministry stated.
The deliveries are in response to an urgent request from Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov , to their French and Italian counterparts to help “protect the civilian population and infrastructure from Russian airstrikes,” according to a statement.
During a visit by Reznikov to Paris on Tuesday, French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu had already announced that his country would send another 12 Caesar truck-mounted howitzers and fresh air defense equipment to Ukraine.
