The Swiss Parliament recognized the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as genocide of the Ukrainian people. This is a historic decision and a very important step on the way to the restoration of historical justice.

This was reported by Verkhovna Rada Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk on Facebook.

In a statement adopted, the lower house of parliament – the Swiss National Council – recognizes systematic actions aimed at mass and targeted killing by starvation with the intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, an act of genocide.

This is truly a historic decision. And this is an extremely important step on the way to restoring historical justice and preserving the memory of millions of innocent victims, Stefanchuk said.

The statement was approved by 123 votes, 58 deputies were against and 7 abstained, according to the website of the Swiss Parliament. According to the text, four million Ukrainians, about two million Kazakhs and hundreds of thousands of Russians died during the famine in Ukraine in 1932 and 1933.

The National Council recognizes an act of genocide is clearly systematic actions that lead to mass and purposeful starvation and are committed with the intention of destroying a national, ethnic, racial or religious group as such in whole or in part, the text says.

Holodomor was recognized as genocide of the Ukrainian people by parliaments about three dozen countries of the world, as well as the European Parliament and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
