The strangest phone: the E Ink model can work for 6 days on a single charge (video)

Mudita Kompakt is powered by a quad-core MediaTek chip, has 3GB of RAM and 32 GB of built-in memory.

The E Ink company is preparing a refill among smartphones that are designed for minimal use. Details about the Mudita Kompakt gadget have become known. New Atlas writes about it.

Fresh off Kickstarter, this little phone from the Polish gadget brand comes with a custom OS, a monochrome display, a limited set of apps and… that's about it. And that's the point. The idea of Kompakt — help control screen time.

Kompakt is built around a 4.3-inch E Ink touch screen with a resolution of 800×480 pixels. It runs on a quad-core MediaTek chip, has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of built-in storage. It delivers modest performance suitable for a phone with basic applications in a body that's easy to hold and use.

The smartphone features a 3.5mm headphone jack, a fingerprint scanner, an 8-megapixel primary camera with dual-LED flash, NFC, a USB-C port, wireless charging support, and a dual-SIM tray that can also be installed microSD card instead of a single SIM card.

The case has a protection class of IP54, so it should withstand dust and splashes without any problems. And while you can buy additional cases and protective films, it looks like the phone will do just fine without a case.

Kompakt got a unique hardware switch that turns on Offline+ mode when you want to completely disconnect from the world. Not only does this turn off cellular networks, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth just like airplane mode does, but it also turns off the 3 microphones and built-in camera. Plus, it physically turns off the GSM module.

Mudita uses the Open Source Project's custom Android OS on Kompakt, with no built-in Google services, so no data is collected or shared with advertisers. The company promises 3 years of wireless software updates.

The device comes with several pre-installed applications:

  • Phone and SMS
  • Offline maps
  • Weather
  • Ebook
  • Notes
  • Dictaphone
  • Calculator
  • Camera (only for photos, video recording is not possible)
  • Meditation timer
  • Music player
  • Chess

There are no messaging services like WhatsApp or streaming apps like Spotify. Mudita leaves it up to customers to decide whether they want to download these Android apps from outside, although they may impact performance or not be fully supported. Naturally, this will be an adjustment for people making the switch to what is essentially a feature phone for the first time.

The phone doesn't sync data with many cloud services, so you'll need to use the Mudita Center desktop app to back up data, download files like music and books, and manage contacts. It offers more privacy than today's popular cloud-based alternatives.

Although the campaign has just launched, it has already surpassed its fundraising goal of $162,000. That's not surprising, given that Mudita has previously released a number of mindfulness-focused products, including a phone with an E Ink display and a numeric keypad. Oh, and here's a fun fact: the company was founded by the co-founder of CD Projekt, the game studio behind award-winning blockbusters like The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077.

If all goes well, this device will be another option in a small , but to an attractive new line of distraction-free phones that includes the metal Light Phone III, due next February for $499, and the $399 Minimal Phone with a BlackBerry-style QWERTY keyboard, which should start by the end of 2024.
