In Estonia, the speaker of the country's parliament, Henn Põlluaas, said that it was Tallinn that began the “collapse of the Soviet Union.” We are talking about the declaration of the country's Supreme Council adopted in 1988 on the sovereignty of the Estonian SSR.

Henn Põlluaas, in his address in connection with the Renaissance Day, said that the adoption of the historical document marked the beginning of the collapse of the “communist empire of evil.” The holiday he named is the most important date in the establishment of Estonian independence, which took place 32 years ago. The declaration of the Armed Forces on the country's sovereignty served as the basis for the beginning of the state's movement towards freedom and democracy, which were suppressed for about 50 years by the Soviet Union.
The adoption of the declaration concerning the sovereign position of Estonia was the first step on the country's path towards the restoration of independence. At the same time, an example was set for other states that were at that time “under the occupation of the USSR.”
