Only four national teams have succeeded in the previous eight World Championships, the Spanish women are the fifth winners. The United States, which has four triumphs, did not achieve a golden hat-trick this year and was eliminated in the round of 16 with eventual bronze medalist Sweden. The German women have won the World Cup twice, and the Norwegian and Japanese women have each triumphed once.
The first chance of the match between the two newcomers in the World Cup final was given to England's Daly after a quarter of an hour, who hit the crossbar. In the 29th minute, Carmona opened the scoring with a cross shot. The 23-year-old defender followed up the winning strike from the semi-final against Sweden (2:1). At the end of the first half, Paralluelová hit the post.
In the 70th minute, Hermosová had an even better chance to add insurance, taking a penalty kick on Walsh's hand. Goalkeeper Earpsová, however, caught the direction of the shot and the experienced gunner's attempt went away.
However, just like in the round of 16 with Nigeria, the English women did not score from play and did not follow up on last year's triumph at the Euros, where they defeated today's opponents in the quarterfinals. The Albion selection lost a competitive match for the first time under Dutch coach Sarina Wiegman. The unbeaten streak stopped at 29 games.
Spain is the second country after Germany to win both the women's and men's World Cup. Spanish footballers succeeded in 2010.
