Spain's parliament has passed a controversial law granting amnesty to hundreds of Catalan separatists who face prosecution for their roles in a failed secession attempt in 2017.

The law passed by a narrow margin: 177 votes in favor ; with 172 “against”, reports “Voice” of America.

He was supported by the left-wing coalition government of Spain and two Catalan separatist parties. The conservative “People's Party” opposed and the far-right Voice party.

Catalan separatists are part of the Catalan independence movement, which seeks independence for the region from Spain.

Former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont could benefit from the new amnesty law , who fled to Belgium to escape Spanish law after leading an illegal attempt to secede the region in October 2017.
