The Simpsons : the white actors not to double more characters of color

While the struggle against racism has intensified in recent weeks following the death of George Floyd, Fox has announced that the characters of color in its series The Simpsons will not be doubled by the actors white. This is the case of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, but also Dr. Hibbert.

Since the death of George Floyd, who was killed by a white policeman, the movement Black Lives Matter extends. In addition to the protests to denounce police violence but also racial discrimination, several large companies have taken key measures to combat racism. This is the case of Netflix, which has made available, for free, the documentary the shock of the Ava DuVernay titled “13th”, which denounces the massive incarceration of African-Americans in the United States and has created a category of “Black Lives Matter”.

Finished the characters, black Simpson doubled by white actors

It is now the turn of The Simpsons to take a radical decision : the white actors not to double more characters of color. “We are moving forward.”, announced the Fox studios. “The Simpsons will no longer have white actors to provide the voices of the characters non-white”. This concerns in particular the character of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, a grocer of indian origin, doubled by the actor Hank Azaria, who announced in January his retirement after having been accused of promoting racist stereotypes. Other affected character : Dr. Hibbert will be more than doubled by Harry Shearer, actor white, who also lends his voice to Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders, or principal Skinner.

Other series have taken similar decisions, such as Big Mouth (Netflix) and Central Park (Apple TV+) or The Griffin (Family Guy en VO). Mike Henry, who double the character black Cleveland Brown announced that he was relinquishing his role : “It has been an honor to play Cleveland in Family Guy for twenty years. I love this character but people of color should play characters of color.”
