Shortly after, North Korea's state news agency said the launch had failed and the launch vehicle's engine, a new development, exploded during the first stage of the flight.
Before that, signs of a launch failure were reported in South Korea and Japan.
Also on Monday, Japan announced the launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea.
