On Monday, Pyongyang said it plans to put its second reconnaissance satellite into orbit by June 4.

Shortly after, North Korea's state news agency said the launch had failed and the launch vehicle's engine, a new development, exploded during the first stage of the flight.

Before that, signs of a launch failure were reported in South Korea and Japan.

Also on Monday, Japan announced the launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea.
