The Russian Federation uses “invulnerable” drones on fiber optics: the expert called their weak point

The Russian Federation uses

Ukrainian engineers are already looking for a solution against such UAVs. But even now, an optical fiber can catch on something or burn out due to the slightest mistake of the operator.

Russian troops attack the positions and equipment of the defenders of Ukraine with attack copters, which are connected by optical fiber. Aviation expert Anatoly Khrapchynskyi in a comment to NV  told how big a threat they pose and what disadvantages they have.

When data is transmitted via optical fiber directly to the operator, drones cannot be suppressed by traditional methods of radio-electronic warfare, because there are no radio signals. In addition, the data transmission itself can be much faster and more reliable.

However, the technology has its weaknesses. As Anatoliy Khrapchynsky noted, the fiber-optic drone needs to be controlled very skillfully. The spool with the fiber optic thread is under the copter, so it cannot catch on the screws, but there may be other obstacles in the way. Thus, there are constant explosions in the combat zone, and there is a great risk that the fiber will catch fire and burn out together with the connection.

The expert added that Ukrainian engineers have been looking for ways to overcome this threat for a long time and are working on countermeasures. There are some electronic warfare techniques that can help against these drones.

“There are certainly some possibilities for, for example, the use of certain electronic warfare tools to affect the capabilities of these drones. But the engineering community is now actively working on countermeasures and has been considering solutions for a long time “, — says the expert.
