Officials in Russia have confirmed that their laboratories will study deadly microbes like the Ebola virus to protect against bioterrorism and pandemics. However, experts suggest that the expansion of the laboratory in Serhiyiv Posad-6 may indicate the development of biological weapons.

A comparison of satellite images shows that over the past two years, the Russians have been actively building new facilities on the territory of a secret laboratory in the Sergiev Posad-6 military town near Moscow. Several of the new buildings have the characteristics of biological laboratories, where it is possible to work with dangerous pathogens. This was reported by The Washington Post on October 25.

Journalists of the publication compare satellite images of the Serhiyiv Posad-6 territory collected by Google Earth and commercial image processing companies MAXAR and Planet Labs over the past two years. On them, you can see how construction machines are reconstructing an old Soviet-era laboratory and starting the construction of ten new buildings.

From the obtained data, they conclude that the Russians are building a facility with a high level of biological safety. The pictures show dozens of ventilation units on the roof, signs of underground infrastructure, a divided layout, which is typical of laboratories, and somewhat similar to a power plant.

In recent weeks, Russian officials have publicly confirmed that scientists will use the labs to study deadly germs like the Ebola virus, WP reports. The Russians explain this as a desire to strengthen the country's defense against bioterrorism and future pandemics. In the United States, laboratories working with the Ebola virus are “biosafety level 4” (BSL-4) and equipped to handle the most deadly and incurable pathogens.

A biological laboratory near Moscow: the danger is compared to a nuclear one

There are no signs of the use of biological weapons in the Russian-Ukrainian war, but US intelligence is closely monitoring the construction of new laboratories at Serhiyev Posad-6, the article says.

Andrew K. Weber, a former senior Pentagon official who spent years researching Soviet bioweapons facilities in the 1990s, said he was troubled by Moscow's decision to build new research facilities in the top-secret city, which in the past was known for its role in bioweapons research.

“The modernization is consistent with the historical role of this top-secret military biological facility in the development of viral biological weapons,” — said Weber.

Ukrainian army general, former head of the foreign intelligence service, Mykola Malomuzh said on Channel 24 that information about biolaboratories in Russia had already appeared before, and now we have received confirmation.

< p>“Russia has not stopped developing nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. They call it the “triad of global war”. First it was the triad of deterrence, and now it is the triad of terror,” — said the general.

The ex-intelligence officer believes that in Sergiy Posad-6, the Russians store and manufacture biological weapons that can cause contagious and practically incurable diseases in people. In his opinion, this will make it possible to spread epidemics that will threaten not only people, but also animals and plants, and may be more dangerous than nuclear warheads.
