President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden traveled to London on Saturday afternoon, where they are due to attend the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The Bidens left Washington unaccompanied by any former U.S. presidents who will not attend the funeral.

Earlier this week, the White House said the royal invitation to the funeral, which will be held Monday at Westminster Abbey, was addressed only to the Bidens.

The Queen died on September 8 after a 70-year reign, and her passing caused grief and mourning in the United Kingdom and around the world.

Elizabeth has met with several US presidents, including Donald Trump, Barack Obama and George W. Bush in recent years. A total of 13 of the last 14 American presidents have received a Queen's audience, starting with Harry Truman in 1951. At that time, Elizabeth had not yet ascended the throne and was a princess. The only American president not to have met the Queen in over 70 years was Lyndon Johnson.

The Bidens, who met with the Queen in June 2021, are due to arrive in London on Saturday evening.

< p>Meanwhile, it became known that British Prime Minister Liz Truss abandoned plans to meet with the US President in London during the Queen's funeral. Instead, the decision was made to organize a full bilateral meeting between Liz Truss and Joe Biden on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly on Wednesday. This was announced on Saturday in Downing Street.

On Sunday, the Bidens are due to pay their respects to the late Queen, whose coffin is in Westminster Hall. They will then make notes in the official condolence book before heading to a reception hosted by King Charles III.

About 100 presidents and heads of government will attend Elizabeth's funeral.

The 79-year-old Biden said the queen reminded him of his mother. The president is well aware of the pain of losing loved ones: in 2015, his adult son Beau died of cancer, and Joe Biden's first wife and young daughter died in a plane crash in the early 1970s.

The President and First Lady of the United States will return to Washington on Monday after the funeral.
