Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Ohio Senator Jade Vance have agreed to debate each other on October 1, setting up a real contest between the two potential vice presidents as early voting for the general election begins in some states.

Vice President Kamala Harris has also agreed to hold a second debate with Donald Trump on September 10, the Associated Press reports.

On Wednesday, CBS News posted on its X account that the Vance-Walz debate would be held in New York City, offering four possible dates to choose from: Sept. 17, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, and Oct. 8.

Walz reposted a message from his own campaign account: “See you Oct. 1, JD.”

The Harris-Walz campaign posted a message back, saying Walz “looks forward to debating JD Vance if he shows up.”

Vance posted on X that he was “accepting the invitation for October 1st.” He also challenged Walz, adding that he was “willing to meet on September 18th as well.”

Harris-Walz campaign officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Vance's offer to host an earlier debate, which could be aired on CNN, or whether Walz would participate.

CNN officials confirmed that Vance had accepted the network's invitation to the debate.

CBS confirmed that evening news anchor Nora O'Donnell and Margaret Brennan of “Face the Nation” will moderate the Oct. 1 debate.

Whether Walz and Vance will hold additional debates before the Nov. 5 election remains in question.

The vice presidential debate will take place three weeks after the Trump-Harris debate on ABC News on Sept. 10.

Trump said he had agreed to several other debate dates on three different networks. Fox News has proposed a debate between Harris and Trump on Sept. 4, while NBC News is leaning toward a debate on Sept. 25.

During her appearance in Michigan, Harris said she was “excited to continue the conversation” about additional debates.

On Thursday, the Harris campaign said Trump “accepted our offer of three debates,” meaning one between the vice presidential candidates in addition to the two presidential debates.

Assuming Trump participates in the Sept. 10 CBS debate, Harris-Walz campaign spokesman Michael Tyler said “the American people will have another opportunity” see the vice president and Donald Trump on the debate stage in October,” without mentioning a specific date or network.

None of the campaigns responded to requests for comment on whether a date and network had been agreed upon for the second presidential debate.
