The European Union needs to prepare for a possible war and increase arms production, since the risks for Europe are growing due to the Russian-Ukrainian war and the Kremlin’s threats.

The President of the European Commission stated this Ursula von der Leyen on the air of the German radio station Deutschlandfunk, quoted by Deutsche Welle.

— Anyone who speaks and acts like Putin does not want peace, but intends to continue, — she said.

According to von der Leyen, consistent support for Ukraine and the simultaneous strengthening of its own defense capabilities are important.

— If we are to maintain peace on our continent, then we need to invest in defense— she said.

As the head of the European Commission points out, “hybrid attacks” have intensified. Russia, in particular due to the recent removal of border markings on the border with Estonia in the Baltic Sea, the use of migrants as a tool of pressure on the European Union and attempts to split Europeans using social networks.

Von der Leyen also points out that in The European Union needs to develop the defense industry, which can have a positive impact on the EU economy:

An example of such influence is the proposal by Poland and Greece to create a joint air defense system.

— It is important that the billions we invest also create good jobs here in Europe— she explained.

She added that financing of measures to strengthen defense capability should be carried out using budgetary funds from contributions from EU member states.
