Pope Francis met with Metropolitan Anthony on Friday , the second most influential leader of the Russian Orthodox Church.
According to Reuters, a meeting is also expected with Kirill Gundyaev, nicknamed Patriarch Kirill.
The Vatican has included Anthony in the list of official meetings of the Pope, but did not provide details of the private audience.
The Department for External Church Relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, which is headed by Anthony, reported that the conversation was conducted in Italian and discussed “numerous issues on the agenda of Orthodox-Catholic relations, including in the context of the political processes taking place in the world,” the Interfax agency reported.
