>> Sammy Basso

The oldest man with premature aging syndrome, Sammy Basso, died in Italy on October 5. The scientist was only 28 years old.

His death was announced by the Italian Progeria Association, which Basso founded with his parents in 2005.

Sammy Basso was born in 1995 in a small a town in the north of Italy Scio. At the age of two, he was diagnosed with Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome (progeria). Already at the age of 10, he and his parents founded the Italian Progeria Association, which researched and raised funds for the study of the disease.

Progeria, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome (HGPS), is a rare, fatal genetic disorder that causes premature aging in humans. The average life expectancy of patients with progeria without treatment is only 13.5 years.

Thanks to Sammy Basso, the study of the disease has advanced significantly over the past 20 years. He has been active in progeria research, conferences and events aimed at raising awareness of the disease.

On October 5, 2024, our light, our guide, went out. Thanks to Sammy for making us a part of life, said the Italian Progeria Association.

The disease affects only 1 person in 20 million. Only 130 cases of progeria are known in the world, of which four were recorded in Italy. However, the Italian Progeria Association estimates that there may be up to 350 cases of the disease in the world – it is difficult to track, especially in developing countries.
