The Odesa Zoo is replenished: green monkeys have a baby

A baby was born to a family of green monkeys living in the Odessa Zoo. It happened about a month ago, but the mother hid it from visitors until recently.

Now you can observe the baby and his relatives. This was reported on the Facebook page of the “Odesa Zoo” CU.

The zoo added that green monkeys give birth to only one cub, usually it already has fur and eyes open. Up to a year, the baby lives with the mother.

Immediately after the mother cleans the newborn, it firmly grabs the fur on her belly. In the first weeks, the mother constantly takes care of the cub: she cleans its fur, licks it and regularly feeds it. When it goes too far or tries to escape, the mother pulls it by the tail, the zoo said.

Green monkeys got their name because of the characteristic color of the upper part of the body, usually an olive shade. These animals have a long tail – 30-50 cm, the length of the whole body – 55-70 cm. Weight – from 2.5 to 7.5 kg. They have large cheek pouches, like hamsters. In addition, they are able to make many sounds. Green monkeys are omnivorous and lead a diurnal semi-arboreal lifestyle.

This is not the first addition to the Odessa Zoo this year. On April 1, the goat gave birth to 5 kids at once. The director of the zoo, Ihor Bilyakov, said that they plan to submit an application to the Book of Records in this regard.
