The Organization of American States (OAS) will send an election observation missionto monitor the provincial and local elections and the popular consultations that will be held simultaneously next February 5 in Ecuador, as reported this Wednesday by the National Electoral Council b> of that country.
The inter-American organization will monitor the elections of prefects of the provinces, mayors, municipal councilors and parish authorities, in addition to the seven members of the Council of Citizen Participation and Social Control (Cpccs).
It will also observe the national referendumpromoted by the Government on issues of security, environment and democracy, among others, as well as a popular consultation on the creation of the canton (municipality) Sevilla Don Bosco in the Amazon province of Morona Santiago.
Through a letter signed by its Secretary General, Luis Almagro, the OAS confirmed that “it will have the honor to deploy a mission to observe the different electoral processes that will be held in Ecuador”.
“The OAS remains committed to strengthening the electoral processes in the Americas through its observation efforts and technical cooperation. In this context, it will be a pleasure for the OAS to continue working with the electoral authorities of Ecuador”, he explained.

The CNE has ordered the printing of82,423,000 ballots for the appointment of 23 prefects, 221 mayors, 864 urban councilors, 443 rural councilors, 4,109 members of parish councils and 7 CPCCS councilors.
Ecuadorians residing abroad who are registered on the electoral roll may only vote to designate the seven members of the Participation Council.
Of the total number of eligible voters to participate in the February 5 process, 13,040,797 will be able to vote in the national territory and 409,250 abroad.

Voters with compulsory voting, between the ages of 18 and 65, amount to 11,096,824, while 635,381 citizens between the ages of 16 and 18, as well as 1,717,842 voters over the age of 65 are part of optional voting groups, as are the military.
