The latest Skyranger 30 anti-aircraft system was first installed on the Piranha V battleship

According to an article in a Spanish newspaper published on August 29, 2024, the Skyranger 30, the latest system from the German company Rheinmetall, was first demonstrated at Piranha V 8×8 armored vehicles during the Danish Defense Acquisition exhibition. This announcement came after Denmark expressed its intention to integrate this system into its short-range air defense development strategy.

Skyranger 30 is an innovative hybrid solution in the air defense system. Equipped to fire ABM munitions that explode in mid-air, scattering 200 grams of tungsten subprojectiles, this system is optimized to counter small drone threats.

A great aspect of the Skyranger 30 is the integration of Hensoldt's Spexer 2000M 3D MkIII radar capable of tracking up to 300 targets simultaneously at a distance of 40 kilometers. These radars are also in operation in Germany and Hungary, which underlines the recognized efficiency and reliability of this technology.

Denmark plans to purchase 15 units of this system to augment the 309 Piranha V armored vehicles already in service in various configurations in its army. This initiative is part of the overall strengthening of air defense in Europe, the catalyst of which is the recent experience of the war in Ukraine.

Rheinmetall made its commitment to air defense clear at the recent Eurosatory 2024 exhibition in Paris, where the Skyranger was shown in various configurations, including for the first time on a Leopard 2 tank chassis.

The speed at which this system can be deployed is in working order, is under discussion and the parties hope to conclude a contract in the coming days. These investments reflect not only the growing importance of ground-based air defense in response to current threats, but also the introduction of advanced technologies to ensure national security and sovereignty.

About the Air Defense System

Skyranger 30 — a ground-based air defense system (GBAD) designed to effectively counter air and ground threats at short and very short ranges. It is equipped with a KCE 30mm x 173 gun with an effective range of up to 3,000 meters, capable of high rate of fire and equipped with air burst ammunition for increased effectiveness against aerial targets. This system is known for its superior firepower and accuracy.

In terms of sensors, the Skyranger 30 features advanced search and track sensors that provide continuous 360-degree aerial and ground surveillance, providing continuous monitoring and engagement capabilities. This includes an AESA radar and optoelectronic packages that work together to detect, track and effectively classify targets.

The Skyranger 30's design is highly modular, allowing the integration of various weapon systems, including short-range air defense missiles such as the FIM-92 Stinger or the Saab RBS 70, increasing its operational range and versatility. This modularity also supports future upgrades, such as the inclusion of a high-energy laser or vertically launched C-PGM missiles, adapting to new threats on the battlefield.

About the battleship

Piranha V 8×8 — is a fifth-generation armored personnel carrier developed by General Dynamics European Land Systems – Mowag GmbH. It features significant improvements in protection, mobility and cargo capacity compared to its predecessors. The Piranha V can accommodate up to 3 crew members and 8 passengers in a configuration that allows it to be adapted for various combat missions such as troop transport, reconnaissance and command support.

Powered by a 577 hp MTU 6V199 TE21 diesel engine , the car can reach a maximum speed of 100 km/h and has a range of 1000 km. Its adjustable hydropneumatic suspension provides exceptional mobility on a variety of surfaces, similar to the mobility of tracked machinery. The Piranha V is also equipped with an integrated power management system that allows power consumption to be adapted to the needs of on-board systems, thus increasing operational efficiency.

In terms of armament, the Piranha V can be equipped with a variety of turrets, including 30mm automatic cannons and anti-tank missile systems, in accordance with the specific needs of the armed forces that use it. The vehicle offers ballistic protection at STANAG 4569 level, resistant to fire of up to 14.5 mm caliber all around and up to 30 mm in the front.
