The new iPhone 16 smartphone is depreciating at a record pace: what went wrong

According to analysts, the latest iPhones are depreciating faster than their flagship Android rivals.

Two weeks after release, iPhone 16 series smartphones in “like new” condition can be sold on the US secondary market for an average of 41.2% less than their original price. This is the fastest depreciation on record for an iPhone, according to a report by SellCell.

According to the study, the iPhone 16 depreciates 8% faster than the iPhone 15 of its time in the first two weeks of sales. Moreover, this trend is observed not only in standard models, but also in the entire line.

At the same time, Samsung devices show the opposite picture. Over the year, the Galaxy S23 lost 61% of its price, better than the Galaxy S22, which lost 66% in value over the same period. The new Galaxy S24 shows an even slower decline in value, according to data from the first six months.

SellCell analysts note that iPhones have long been considered the best investment among mobile devices because they can it was profitable to sell after some time. However, starting with the iPhone 12, each new generation loses value faster than the last. This can significantly affect the decisions of consumers when choosing a new smartphone.

Another study showed that the iPhone 16 is the least popular Apple smartphone in the last 5 years. In this regard, the company had to reduce the volume of orders for new iPhones in order to avoid losses.

iPhone 16 went on sale on September 20. Western media in their reviews note that this is one of the best updates to the basic iPhone in the last few years, but the “pros” call it boring, although it is still the best choice overall.

It also turned out that at the time of release, the iPhone 16 came out “raw”. The fact is that the smartphones came with iOS 18 pre-installed, which does not have any AI features. They will appear only at the end of October with the iOS 18.1 update, and the coolest features, including “smarter Siri”, will have to wait until spring 2025.

At the same time, insiders claim that the iPhone 17 will be the most interesting iPhone in recent years. In 2025, the basic models will finally switch to 120-hertz screens, the “front panel” will be updated for the first time in many years, and the Plus model will replace the “ultra-thin” iPhone Air.
