The new master plan of the park national Quttinirpaaq, which was tabled in Parliament on December 12, plans, among other things, to advance “the nomination with a view to requesting that the park be included in the list of world heritage sites.”
Quttinirpaaq National Park's second management plan will guide management of the park over the next ten years while ensuring Inuit rights are protected and Inuit knowledge (or Qaujimajatuqangit) is used to guide management decisions, says Parks Canada press release.
Quttinirpaaq National Park is located on northern Ellesmere Island in Nunavut and covers an area of 37,775 square kilometers. It is the second largest park in the country. Parks Canada and the Inuit manage this park together through a committee.
The master plan (New window), the objective of which is in particular to encourage visitors to explore it while ensuring that human activity does not disturb ecosystems, is based around three key strategies.

The first key strategy aims, among other things, to implemented initiatives such as Inuit-led research projects to encourage Inuit participation in the management of the national park.

This participation also includes economic initiatives to promote employability and the development of the tourism industry in neighboring communities, including Resolute.
Within three years, at least two learning activities, which could be led by a community member, [will] be created to transmit knowledge and to stimulate interest in the communities of Resolute and Grise Fiord, says the master plan.
Quttinirpaaq is an Inuktitut word meaning “at the top”. It was named for its location, perched at the top of the world.

Working together is the second key strategy of this plan. A position deemed necessary due to the geographical location of the national park. Located less than 500 miles from the North Pole, its remoteness means access is a financial and logistical challenge for all, making it essential to work together towards common goals.
Quttinirpaaq is Canada's northernmost national park.
This strategy provides for collaborations and agreements with professionals from various sectors of activity, notably the tourism industry and scientific research, but also with public entities, such as National Defense. Opportunities [will] be found to support the reestablishment of historic human ties with Greenland, are also among the targets of this strategy.
The third and final key strategy focuses on exchange: Learning about each other and the land.
This strategy highlights the opportunity that the national park offers Quttinirpaaq to learn more about the unique coexistence of the Inuit with the land and wildlife, specifies the document.
Erosion has been observed throughout the park, and the situation is expected to get worse.

Its objective is, among other things, to provide an understanding of Arctic ecosystems and climate change in a used environment, but relatively unchanged, by human activity, and located near the North Pole. Moreover, the impact of climate change will continue to be studied and monitored according to the master plan.
In addition to the key strategies, the master plan includes a zoning plan particularly for the Lake Hazen/Tasiuk basin.
