The legendary Tamagotchi is conquering the world again: sales have doubled

Legendary toy of the 90s — Tamagotchi — again found herself in the center of attention. According to the BBC, demand for the virtual pets has grown so much that Bandai Namco has opened the first official Tamagotchi store in the UK.

The updated version of the popular toy appeals not only to young people, but also to adults, offering new technological features, including connectivity via Wi-Fi and the ability to communicate with friends.

In today's stressful world, people are looking for easy ways to distract themselves and relax. Virtual pets like Tamagotchi have become the perfect solution for this, providing an opportunity to experience care and enjoyment of play. After several failed attempts to revive the brand, Bandai Namco succeeded. According to company representatives, global sales will more than double from 2022 to 2023. Interestingly, even in 1996, at the peak of its popularity, there was no official Tamagotchi store in Great Britain. a bright egg with a digital screen and buttons — however, its functions have expanded significantly. “Now you can chat with friends, connect via Wi-Fi and download various items”, — said Priya Jadja, Tamagotchi Brand Manager.

To remind you, Tamagotchi officially returned to the UK in 2019 and has since become popular with people of all ages.

“We hoped that the new Tamagotchi would be of interest mainly to millennials,” — says Priya Jaja. “But it's nice to see that the younger generation, who have never played with such devices before, are discovering it.” For example, Bitzee from Hatchimals features a flexible screen that responds to touches and tilts. Another product, Punirunes from the Japanese company Takara Tomy, allows you to “pet” a virtual pet on the screen by placing your finger inside the device.

Another classic of the 90s is DigiMon virtual pets, also owned by Bandai Namco and originally created as an option for boys. However, Priya Jaja emphasizes that there are no gender restrictions now — People of all ages and genders buy Tamagotchi.
