The killer of two Ukrainian soldiers in Bavaria may have committed the crime because of “wounded national pride”

A Russian suspected of killing two Ukrainian soldiers in rehabilitation has been charged with murder in Germany. Investigators have learned that he may have done it because of "wounded national pride".

This was reported by the Associated Press, citing the Munich prosecutor's office.

The name of the 57-year-old suspect has not been released, but it is known that he was close to the deceased Ukrainian soldiers. On the day of the murder, all three were drinking and arguing about the situation in Ukraine.

According to the German prosecutor's office, during this, “the accused felt that his national pride had been wounded,” so he suddenly decided to kill the Ukrainians. He brought a knife from a neighboring apartment and stabbed the men.

One of them died immediately, and the second died from his wounds later.

According to prosecutors, the suspect, “as a supporter of exaggerated Russian nationalism,” supports Russia's war against Ukraine.

On the evening of April 27, in the German city of Murnau am Staffelsee in Bavaria, two Ukrainians were found with stab wounds on the territory of a shopping center.

According to law enforcement, the 36-year-old man died at the scene from his severe injuries, and the second, 23, died in the hospital. Later, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reported that the men were military personnel undergoing rehabilitation in Bavaria. One of them served in the 81st Airborne Brigade of the Airborne Assault Troops.

The suspect was detained that same evening at his place of residence near the shopping center. He turned out to be a 57-year-old Russian citizen. He was remanded in custody. The investigation is currently ongoing.

A representative of the Munich Prosecutor General's Office told DW that “political motives” are not ruled out in the investigation. The prosecutor's office also confirmed that the Bavarian Central Office for Combating Extremism and Terrorism has joined the investigation.
