The iPhone side button has 4 functions that few people knew about: what exactly is it?

The smartphone's side button will help you call emergency services, reduce the effect of motion sickness in the car, fall asleep or relax, and also activate the “magnifier” function.

The iPhone's side button not only locks the screen — it hides at least four very convenient functions. This is written by The Sun.

With the right combination of settings and “clicks” you can make it do amazing things, including helping to avoid motion sickness in the car.

The first three tricks on the list are for a feature called Accessibility Shortcuts. This lets you assign different functions to the side button, all of which are activated by a quick “triple-click.” There are dozens of options, but here are some that are particularly handy. First, you'll need to head to Settings — Accessibility — Accessibility Shortcuts.

The button will still work to lock your iPhone, but if you triple-click it, it will activate the function of your choice. And if you have multiple options to choose from, a triple-click will open a pop-up menu of choices, allowing you to tap the one you want.

One of the best features of the iPhone is the background sounds that can help you focus or even fall asleep. You can choose a default background sound in the Settings menu — “Universal Access” — “Audio and Video” — “Background Sounds”.

Options include:

  • Balanced Noise
  • Ocean
  • Rain
  • Broadcast
  • Night
  • Fire

These sounds can be used not only for sleeping: you can also listen to them over podcasts and other types of media.

Second — Vehicle Motion Cues is an app designed to combat motion sickness when using your iPhone while driving.

“If you experience discomfort when using your iPhone while traveling as a passenger in a car, you can turn on Vehicle Motion Cues — on-screen cues that can help reduce motion sickness,” Apple explains.

Vehicle Motion Cues appear as animated dots at the edges of the screen that reflect the car's movement without interfering with your iPhone.

Third — is a magnifier, which is also very useful in certain situations. This is essentially a stripped-down version of the iPhone camera, specifically designed to magnify small objects.

The fourth option is a completely separate feature related to Apple's Emergency SOS feature. You need to go to Settings > Emergency SOS > and then turn on Five-Click Call. Now, if you quickly press the side button five times, your iPhone will activate Emergency SOS. After the countdown is complete, your iPhone will automatically call emergency services.
