The self-propelled modernized installation “Serpent Gorynych” is used in military operations and is called according to the technical documentation UR-77 “Meteorite”. The car has undergone comprehensive upgrades. In fact, we are talking about a new generation of the product, which was demonstrated during the military exercises “Kavkaz-2020”. The previous version of the SPG was used in Syria, and then the experience gained was used in the construction of a new series of “Serpent Gorynych”, and the vehicle received improved characteristics. An electrical system was installed in it, which allows you to move over short distances without starting the engine. In this case, the machine is extremely difficult to detect using infrared equipment. Among the innovations, an automated fire control system is noted, which strikes targets with high accuracy. The means of observation and communication were also improved.
The expert noted that the main task of the UR-77 “Meteorite” is not to destroy the enemy with fire. It's about mine clearance. The ejected projectile is connected by a cable with a warhead, then the laid mine devices are detonated due to the detonation of the earth when the sent mini-missile explodes. Thus, a passage is formed in the minefield. The projectile pulls a cable with explosives, visually it resembles a fiery jet from a dragon's mouth, for this reason, the installation was called the “Serpent Gorynych”, the historian explained.
