President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen
Ursula von der Leyen said that Putin continues to use energy as a weapon
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU should develop action plans for a case of emergency to prepare for a complete shutdown of Russian gas supplies amid the war in Ukraine.
The EU has already imposed sanctions against Russia, including some energy supplies, and is refusing Kremlin-controlled supplies.
However, the head of the EU executive said the bloc must prepare for shock disruptions coming from Moscow.
“We also need to prepare for further disruptions to gas supplies and even a complete cut in Russian gas supplies” , – said von der Leyen, speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
According to her, about ten EU member states have already suffered from the reduction or complete cessation of gas rates in connection with the intensification of the political confrontation with Moscow over the invasion of Ukraine.
“It's obvious: Putin continues to use energy as a weapon. That is why the Commission is working on a European emergency plan,” she said. – We must be sure that in the event of a complete cessation of supplies, gas will flow to where it is most needed. We must ensure European solidarity.”
