The Golden Globes will be broadcast on CBS for five years

The great American cinema and television event has been losing momentum for several years.

The Golden Globes announced on Monday that they had concluded an agreement with CBS which provides for their broadcast for five years on this American channel, a sign of recovery for a ceremony which has gone through an existential crisis in recent years.

After broadcasting the 81st Golden Globes ceremony in January, CBS agreed to host this convalescent event on a long-term basis, which attempts to shed light on accusations of corruption and racism.

[The team is] very proud to be able to continue to rely on CBS for the broadcast of the Golden Globes, said Jay Penske, one of the new managers of the ceremony.

CBS stood up for the Globes during a very difficult time and understood their value, he added. Oscars, the Golden Globes were previously broadcast on NBC. But due to the scandals which undermined the organization of the ceremony, the channel had interrupted its partnership.

In 2021, the Los Angeles Timeshad revealed that the Golden Globes jury did not include any black people and that its members accepted sumptuous gifts from the studios.

Enough to provoke a vast crisis: the very existence of the event and its relevance for Hollywood have seemed threatened in recent years.

To make people forget these scandals, the Golden Globes were bought by a group of private investors and the association which constituted their jury was dissolved. Reforms have been put in place to improve the ethics of those who vote and increase their diversity.

After boycotting the ceremony entirely in 2022 , Hollywood has shown that it is ready to give in. Despite a few notable absentees, the 2023 and 2024 Golden Globes ceremonies were full of stars, including Steven Spielberg, Michelle Yeoh and Margot Robbie.

CBS was probably also convinced by the encouraging rebound in their audience. Boosted by the presence of the successful films Oppenheimer and Barbie, the last ceremony attracted 9.4 million viewers, after attracting 6.3 million people in 2023, the smallest audience in its history.

As part of the new agreement with the channel, the Golden Globes will also be broadcast on the broadcast platform Paramount+.
