The Russian Ministry of Justice has added the German Historical Institute in Moscow to the list of so-called undesirable organizations. The institute appeared in the corresponding section on the department’s website, Radio Liberty reports.

This means that the Prosecutor General’s Office had previously made a decision to recognize the institute as undesirable, but this was not reported.

German Historical Institute (GIIM) – one of the eleven foreign research institutes of the Max Weber Foundation. It opened in Moscow in 2005. As stated on the institute’s website, its work is aimed at developing and strengthening scientific cooperation between historians from Russia and Germany. After the Russian large-scale invasion of Ukraine, its work was suspended.

The Institute was a partner of a number of Russian educational and scientific organizations, including Moscow State University, as well as publishing houses. Until recently, there was a library at the institute. Also, until February 2022, the institute awarded scholarships to historians from Germany and Russia.

The list of so-called undesirable organizations has existed in Russia since 2015. The authorities included more than 160 NGOs, associations and media into it, including the editorial office of Radio Liberty. A number of German funds are also included in the undesirable list. There is criminal liability for participation in the activities of undesirable organizations in Russia.
