French Minister for European Affairs Clement Bon spoke in favor of granting Ukraine candidate status for EU accession.
The Minister was asked what is the position of France on the possible granting of candidate status to Ukraine after a positive conclusion of the European Commission on its application.
"I think that it is necessary to open negotiations and provide the status of a candidate. We have a special responsibility, because France is still holding the presidency (of the Council of the EU – EH) … Send this signal, this prospect of entry – this is part of the support that we must provide to Ukraine,” said Clément Bon.
He was asked if he meant the usual or accelerated procedure.
“We are talking about the future of Ukrainians, which are under bombardment today. I think that this signal should be given to open negotiations and I hope that this can happen quickly. The negotiations themselves, of course, take time,” said Clement Bon, noting that Ukraine will need to achieve European standards in many areas, from the rule of law to the level of economic development, and this process may take many years.
“I think this will not be a gift to either Ukraine or the EU if you skip all these steps (of the standard procedure),” he said.
