The French army will receive a large number of 120 mm mortars, which are combined with Serval tanks

As part of the ongoing transformation of the French Army, the 3rd Marine Parachute Regiment (3e RPIMa) has received for the first time combined 120-mm heavy mortars with Serval armored vehicles. This innovative configuration allows airborne infantry units to improve emergency fire support near conflict zones, increasing their response capabilities in different theaters of operations.

The 120 mm mortar is a key tactical asset, providing a maximum firing range of 13,000 meters using rocket-propelled grenades. Operated by a crew of six, it can fire six rounds per minute and in rapid mode up to 20 rounds per minute. Its firepower combined with the Serval's mobility provides adapted and responsive fire support even in challenging environments.

The 120-mm mortar, including the MO 120 RT model, developed in France since 1973, is intended for indirect fire support of infantry units. It can launch high-explosive projectiles up to 12,850 meters using rocket munitions or up to 8,140 meters using standard rounds. The system can also fire smoke and illumination projectiles, offering versatility in a variety of tactical scenarios. Typically towed by vehicles such as the VAB or Serval, the mortar provides rapid deployment and high battlefield mobility. Its use is aimed at effective fire support with indirect guidance to neutralize enemy positions, cover movements or illuminate targets, which contributes to increasing the combat effectiveness of infantry units.

The use of heavy mortars in infantry regiments was phased out in the 2000s, handing the capability over to artillery regiments. However, increasing requirements for immediate fire support prompted a review of the Military Programming Act (LPM) for 2024–2030. The plan provides for the creation of 21 120-mm mortar units in infantry regiments, restoration of their autonomy in indirect fire support. Meanwhile, artillery units will receive integrated systems such as Mortiers Embarqués pour l’Appui au Contact (MEPAC) mounted on Griffon vehicles.

The new integration of 120mm mortars with Serval vehicles is a strategic evolution. This combination improves the mobility, protection and firepower of the Parachute Infantry Support and Reconnaissance (CEA) company, offering greater operational flexibility, which is critical in today's combat, where rapid response is essential.

Renewed in 2024, the heavy the 3e RPIMa mortar unit is developing through intensive training conducted at various national ranges. According to a message published on Instagram, the regiment emphasized the desire of its teams to master this ability. Future combat shooting will complete a comprehensive training cycle, consolidating acquired skills.
