The foot of a climber who disappeared 100 years ago was found on Everest

A team of climbers filming a documentary for National Geogrpahic found a foot with a boot on Everest. It probably belongs to one of the first conquerors of the 8,849-meter mountain.

This find may help solve one of the biggest mysteries of mountaineering – whether Irwin and Mallory managed to become the first people to conquer Everest. The title is now held by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who climbed the world's highest peak 29 years later. The BBC writes about it.

Andrew Comyn Irwin (“Sandy”), then a 22-year-old climber, climbed Everest with his partner George Mallory in 1924. Irwin's remains were found due to the melting of the Rongbuk Glacier. Presumably, the ice “melted” just a few weeks before this find.

Irwin's initials were found on the remains of the sock. His relatives provided a DNA sample to make sure it was indeed his leg. Now an examination must take place. But the film's production team is certain it belongs to Irvine because the words “AC Irvine” were embroidered on a sock found inside the shoe.

To prove that Irvine did climb the summit , will have to find his film camera, on which, presumably, the pictures remained. The BBC indicates that Irwin always carried it with him. Jimmy Chin, who led the team, called the discovery a “monumental and emotional moment.”

Irwin and Mallory were last seen alive on June 8, 1924, when they set out for Everest. Malory's body was found by an American climber in 1999.
