The first lithium processing plant in Europe opened in Germany

The German company AMG Lithium opened Europe's first lithium recycling plant in the city of Bitterfeld-Wolfen (Germany). This was announced by the managing director of AMG Lithium, Stefan Scherer, in an interview with the Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung.

AMG Lithium estimates its own investment in the construction of the plant at approximately 140 million euros, of which 5.5 million euros came from regional economic development programs.

The plant created 80 new jobs. AMG Lithium plans to have it up and running at full capacity by next year, producing up to 20,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year, enough to power the batteries of around 500,000 electric vehicles.

The lithium will be mined by AMG in Brazil, transported to Europe by ship and will be thoroughly cleaned and refined at the new plant. The goal is to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide with high energy density.

Cathode and battery cell manufacturers in Hungary and Poland have already confirmed orders for lithium hydroxide.

“With this plant, we are pioneering and making a decisive contribution to the security of supply of the critical lithium raw material for German and European industry,” – explained the Chairman of the Board and CEO of AMG N.V. Heinz Schimmelbusch.

Until now, the leaders in lithium production were China, South America and Australia, but now Europe has also appeared on the map. Even if the processed raw materials are coming from Brazil for now, AMG also hopes to produce lithium in Europe. The company is currently studying the possibility of lithium mining at Zinnwald in Germany or Portugal.
