The first footage after the tragedy of the bathyscaphe “Titan” appeared

The US Coast Guard released the first footage of the Titan submersible after its sinking in June 2023. Members of the amateur research team died when strong ocean pressure damaged the Titan.

This is reported by The Guardian.

What was revealed during the investigation

The broken tail cone of the Titan can be seen at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean, thanks to video taken by the Coast Guard. Fragments of the ship are also visible at the bottom of the ocean — this is the wreckage salvage crews found after the crash.

The Maritime Board of Inquiry said the Titan's detached tail cone and other debris were “compelling evidence” that the vessel had suffered a “catastrophic implosion”.

In the last message, the crew of the Titan sent a text message that it had “dropped two scales,” meaning the submersible had lost two measures of weight in hopes of returning to the ocean surface.

Tony Nissen, former CTO of OceanGate, said he rushed the Titan release because he felt pressure from senior management.

The hearing is expected to last two weeks. The head of the Marine Investigative Commission has already stated that the hearing is aimed at uncovering the facts related to the fatal implosion of the “Titan”. The commission will investigate any potential “misconduct or negligence on the part of seafarers” authorized by the US to sail.
