The first film adaptation of Igor Baranko's comic strip “Maxim the Wasp and the Pesigolovtsa's Gold” directed by Miroslav Latik, the first in Ukraine, is released in cinemas on the occasion of the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks. This is a thriller generously seasoned with Cossack adventures, detective elements and dark fantasy motifs.

The history of the film has been going on since 2012: during this time, not only several producers, but also the director have changed. Filming was completed by producer Valery Borovik, for whom “Maxim Osa and the gold of Pesigolovets” became the first production experience.

“It all started with the fact that, quite unexpectedly, even for myself, I took on the film production company HanzhonkovFilm. I immediately plunged into the new world of cinema for me: I began to select people, because all those who were involved in the creation of the first version of the film moved away from it, and the actors changed a lot visually and looked little like their heroes. In fact, we all started from scratch. In the end, we managed to find a very good team, create a new scenario and actively start work in order to meet the previously approved schedules from Goskino. There were attempts to involve director Ivan Sautkin, who began work on the film several years ago, to the shooting, and he decided to refuse. In the end, we started working with Miroslav Latyk, with a limited budget and very short deadlines. First, I asked the team to make the most of the material left over from the previous team, because it was quite expensive shooting with the involvement of specialists from abroad. As a result, we removed the story from a clean letter, relying on the remaining funds, which amounted to about a third of the total budget for the tape,” said the general producer of the film, Valery Borovik.

The stormy, dangerous, and sometimes hooligan adventures of Maxim Osa catch the eye from the very first frame. The story of a desperate, resolute Cossack is perhaps the first Ukrainian audience feature film, where modern heroism prevails, which successfully combines elements of a detective story, thriller, fantasy and an adult fairy tale.

“Maxim the Wasp and the Gold of Pesigolovets” is an explosive combination of genres. Adventure detective, thriller, action with a modern, but truly Ukrainian director's view of history. We believe that the viewer will appreciate this unique film, and we, in turn, together with our partners, the Kinomaniya company, will do everything to make as many Ukrainians as possible aware of the release of the film. I am sure that Maxim Osa, as the personification of a true Ukrainian warrior – heroic, courageous, ironic and unbending – will become an example for each of us,” comments Nadezhda Korotushka, Head of Cinema Distribution at FILM.UA Distribution.
