The European Commission has ordered TikTok to retain internal information about its work during elections in the EU amid concerns about the possibility of undue influence.
This is stated in a statement by the European Commission dated December 5, writes “European Pravda”.
The EU executive body's order stipulates that TikTok must retain data related to “actual or perceived systemic risks that the service may pose to electoral processes and civic discourse in EU”.
This concerns, among other things, the functioning of TikTok's recommendation systems and responding to the “risk of intentional manipulation through coordinated inauthentic use of the service”.
The European Commission's order will apply to all national elections in the EU and will be in effect from November 24, 2024 to March 31, 2025.
It became known after the declassification of Romanian intelligence documents, which claim that TikTok influenced the victory of far-right presidential candidate Călin Șorgescu in the first round of elections in Romania.
The social network itself is blaming itself rejects.
On December 8, Romania will hold a second round of presidential elections, with Georgescu and pro-European candidate Elena Lasconi competing.
