The end of the M4's dominance: SIG Sauer has released the MCX-SPEAR rifle to the civilian market

The weapon has the original caliber of 6.8×51 mm, and the charge is characterized by a flatter trajectory and increased energy compared to traditional cartridges 5.56mm.

SIG Sauer has released the MCX-SPEAR 6.8×51 rifle to the civilian market, marking the end of the M4's thirty-year dominance and ushering in a new era in firearms development. This model, created within the framework of the Next Generation Squad Weapon (NGSW) program, is designed to meet the requirements of modern combat, providing a long firing range, excellent firepower and modularity. This was reported by Army Recognition observers on September 13.

Features of the new weapon

The main feature of the new rifle is the use of the 6.8×51 mm cartridge, also known as the .277 SIG FURY. This hybrid cartridge combines a brass sleeve with a steel base, allowing it to withstand pressures up to 80,000 PSI. This design provides a bullet speed of more than 900 m/s even with a short barrel length of 40 cm. The cartridge is distinguished by a flatter trajectory and increased energy of hitting the target compared to traditional 5.56 mm cartridges, which makes MCX-SPEAR ideal for long distances.

The MCX-SPEAR rifle is designed with versatility and convenience in mind. Its design allows both right-handed and left-handed users to fire equally comfortably.

In addition, the ability to quickly change the barrel allows you to adapt the rifle to various calibers, including 7.62×51 mm NATO and 6.5 Creedmoor, which expands its capabilities for various tasks — from close combat to long-range collisions.

MCX-SPEAR is equipped with a free-floating M-LOK grip, a complex telescopic stock and an advanced gas exhaust system that reduces recoil and increases reliability in extreme conditions. Another important feature is the SIG Sauer NG68SPEAR-QD silencer, which reduces the noise level and the visibility of the shot.

Reviewers note that the MCX-SPEAR, originally developed for the military, is now available to civilian shooters. Commercial models, with a barrel length of 33 and 40 cm, almost completely repeat the military versions, with minor changes to comply with civilian regulations. The price of the rifle ranges from $4,000 to $4,500.
