Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo will propose reducing the Eiffel Tower lighting time amid the energy crisis and climate emergency. Le Journal du dimanche reports.
The tower's 336 gold spotlights fade per hour nights, but it is proposed that they will now fade out at 23:45, when the last visitors leave the tower.
The Eiffel Tower management company SETE explained that contrary to popular belief, night lighting of the tower is only 4% of the annual bill for electricity of the monument, and flashing of 20 thousand LEDs flashing for 5 minutes at the beginning of each hour – this is energy efficient equipment.
Hence, the event, which will be announced on September 13, is symbolic. Jean-Francois Martins, President of SETE, said that the energy savings achieved will not be phenomenal, but “how the most visited monument in the world, we must set an example".
