Saguenay – Lac-Saint-Jean could benefit from the economic recovery anticipated in 2021, according to the Business Development Bank of Canada, which estimates that the recovery could be faster and stronger.
This analysis is based mainly on two complementary reasons, according to the chief economist of the BDC, Pierre Cléroux. First of all, the demand for lumber is significant at the moment, the number of housing starts having exploded in 2020, thus increasing the needs.
Second, the aluminum sector has also seen its demands increase, which directly benefits Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean.
According to the economist, the region fared better during the second wave.
“The unemployment rate in the region is currently lower than that of the province. Quebec stands out in the economic recovery against the rest of Canada, but Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean will be one of the regions that will stand out in Quebec, ”predicts the specialist.
Pierre Cléroux also said he was optimistic for all of Quebec. “We have noticed in recent months that when the government withdraws the measures [sanitaires], the recovery is happening quickly in this sector. It is therefore positive for restaurants and retail trade ”.
