The Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs is due to release its decision in the Greg Fergus case on Thursday.< /p>

The Liberal MP for Hull-Aylmer, named Speaker of the House last October, is in embarrassment after his recent virtual participation in an Ontario Liberal Party partisan event.

In a two-minute video tribute made for interim party leader John Fraser during the party's leadership convention, Mr. Fergus appears in footage between former provincial Liberal leaders Kathleen Wynne and Dalton McGuinty in his office as president of the House of Commons, dressed in traditional clothing associated with his role. He paid tribute to Mr. Fraser, the outgoing interim leader of the Ontario Liberals. The video mainly discusses his personal relationship with Mr. Fraser, who has represented the provincial Liberals in an Ottawa riding since 2013.

The Conservative Party of Canada and the Bloc Québécois have both called for Mr. Fergus' resignation following the affair. They accuse him of having failed in the duty of neutrality and impartiality imposed by the office of president.

For its part, the New Democratic Party (NDP) instead recommended a financial penalty earlier this week before the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs.

C& #x27;is a fairly serious error of judgment on his part. What is important to us at the NDP is that he receives a fine and that we establish procedures within his team so that such a thing does not happen again in the future. ;future, commented the deputy leader of the party, Alexandre Boulerice, on the microphone of the show Les matins d'ici Thursday.

During his appearance before this committee, Mr. Fergus stated that if elected officials decide that they no longer have confidence in his work and that he cannot regain their confidence, he would submit his resignation.

The committee must submit its report for the consideration of all the elected representatives of the House.
